At SatsVault we focus on the features that are important for Bitcoin as a savings tool.<\/p><p>On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/bitcoin.pdf\">Bitcoin white paper<\/a> called \u201cBitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System\u201d.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Satoshi&#039;s work, which no one knows who it is, builds on work that had started decades earlier. The goal: to create electronic money that cannot be controlled or changed by anyone.<\/span><\/p><p>For savers, the most important properties of Bitcoin are:<\/p><ul><li>Decentralization: There is no one who can influence the operation of Bitcoin as an individual or group. Only a majority of users can change the properties of Bitcoin<\/li><li>Scarcity: There will be a maximum of 21 million bitcoins in circulation, making it not subject to inflation<\/li><li>Divisibility: Because Bitcoin is digital, it can be easily divided into smaller amounts<\/li><li>Portability: Because Bitcoin is digital, it can be easily carried around<\/li><li>Sustainability: 1 bitcoin = 1 bitcoin, now and 100 years in the future<\/li><li>Recognizability: The authenticity of a bitcoin can be easily verified<\/li><\/ul><div>Before Bitcoin existed, gold had most of the desirable properties of money. More than 93% of bitcoins have already been mined; the remainder will be released slowly, after which no new bitcoins will be added after the year 2140.<\/span><\/p><p>Every 10 minutes, new bitcoins become available to the &#039;miners&#039; who secure the network, via the so-called block reward (subsidy). The amount of bitcoin released is halved every four years, in what is known as the &#039;halving&#039;. The next halving will take place in April 2024, after which the number of new bitcoins per day will halve from 900 to 450.\u00a0<\/p><p>The following graph shows with orange bars how the block reward was initially 50 bitcoins per 10 minutes and as of April 2024 is only 3,125.
